1953 AIRSTREAM - FLYING CLOUD
23 foot Vintage trailer that is ready to camp in right now.
The registration is current and the title is clear.
The body is in good shape but not perfect. No leaks! No leaks! No leaks! The windows and 3 roof vents all open from inside the trailer, with all hardware attached and original. The door has the cool “door in a door” with a screen in the main door. You can let the breeze blow through without the mosquitos coming in and it (the door) locks from from both the inside and outside too. One widow in the front fell victim to a baseball and should be replaced but even with that issue, it still does not leak.
The 110 volt electrical is working, with no issues. There is a 12volt system that has been wired in for lights above sink, table and at the back bed area when camping away from a 110 volt source, see the photo of the 2 golf cart batteries under the dinette cushion used for power. This 12 volt light system turns on and off with a single switch. The lights then can be turned on or off at the fixture to suit. The 12 volt wires were run between cabinets and walls and soforth. No ugly holes were drilled into the walls to run funky electrical. All the “funky” MickeyMouse electrical can be taken out if you want and no damage left behind.(I suggest you replace the golf cart batteries before use cuz they may not hold enough charge to last the weekend) The water tank is in it but I would not use any water tank that old. There is a water pump under the other dinette seat that is a 12 volt marine type and is of the on demand type. That means that when you turn on the water faucet, the pump recognizes the drop in pressure and turns on. This has been turned off because of a leak in the pump. The system components are still in place and plumbed in. I have always used fresh water.
The stove is in excellent condition and has a broiler tray, see the pics of that. The gas light is original to the trailer and is funtional however the 12 volt lighting is a much cleaner way to light the night. The built in heater is not connected to the propane system. I could never get it to work right so I capped it off. It looks cool but that is all. I have left the trailer the way I found it so it would have the same appeal to you as it did to me when I bought it. Oh and by the way, I bought it from the son of the original owner, according to him, and I believe him.
The build plate has the ser# on it. The inside of the cabinet doors show the same number on them too, written on them in pencil. The birch wood cabinets are original to the trailer and were evidently built side by side with the trailer. There is some delaminating starting in a few spots but no missing veneer.
The refrigerator is 110 volt and gas (propane) and is working. The pilot is tricky to light but once lit the fridge and freezer work fine.
The bed in the back was custom made to fit that area. I don’t know what was correct for the trailer in the begining as it came to me that way but I can say, it is comfortable and is the best rest I have ever had camping. Camping and sleep, good sleep that is, have never gone hand in hand for me but this trailer and it’s comfortable bed changed that. Under the bed is more room for storage of things like blocks, trailer jacks, power cord, shovel, axe, folding chairs, rope, tarps, boxes of food items (that is all can think of right now that I had there)
2 closets allow for plenty of storage and the many drawers give you places to put all sorts of stuff.
The dinette makes into a bed for 2 also so the trailer can sleep 4 but 2 people who like each other will enjoy the bed in the back. The sleeping arrangement is great for a family of 4 and perfect for a party of two.
The trailering lights all work as they are supposed to, stop, tail, turn all work great. The axel has electric brakes that also work. The trailer tows straight and smooth.
The hubs were recently packed (grease service) and the tires are about 2 year old Coker wide whitewall on custom wheels made for this trailer by Wheel Vintique. Powder coated black with chrome center cone caps and stainless beauty rings. I do have the original wheels if you want them. Not Pretty though!
I am sorry but I cannot recall what it weighs. I have towed it with a half ton PU without any problem and also without the trailer brakes connected to the truck without any problems.
I will say again,. This trailer is useable right now. All you need is your camping gear and a place to go.
I do hate to let it go but it is time.
Do your home work so you will know what to look for in this or any other trailer. Check closed listings on eBay, check some trailers you find for sale, go look at them. Many have been altered and or gutted for use as a ???. I have looked at some and have not found much I liked more. check the web where ever you can but be sure to check apples to apples. Not all Airstreams are the same so one Airstream that sells for one price higher
