1968 AIRSTREAM Safari – 22’
A ready to use, and regularly used, classic Airstream with original interior and many upgrades. Single axel. Collectable size. My favorite size personally. Big enough but not a huge hassle to tow around. Everything in good working order. I have owned it for 10 years. 1968 was the last year of this body style. Trailer is moving to phoenix around christmas if not sold by then. Here is a rundown:
THE GOOD:
- All major service done by Inland RV. If you don’t know who they are in relation to old Airstreams, look em up.
- Hitch coupler was upgraded/replaced to a 2-5/8” ball.
- Electric brakes replaced about 3 years ago
- Axel fully replaced with proper torsion axel with added 500 lb capacity for a little extra ground clearance. (5500lb axel). 3 years ago.
- Shocks replaced. 3 years ago.
- Newer Goodyear Marathon tires. Excellent condition
- Replaced door lock
- Replaced curtains
- Original stove but gas thermostat replaced
- Replaced furnace and thermostat
- Replaced Water Heater
- Replaced aluminum LP gas tanks
- Water lines mostly replaced. All in working order.
- Replaced plumbing vents with cast aluminum vents from inland rv
- Replaced aluminum refrigerator vent cover from inland rv
- Replaced aluminum stove vent cover. These only came in plastic so I custom hammer-formed the cover myself.
- Most window gaskets replaced.
- New awesome $220 deep cycle battery for those longer trips “off the grid”
THE BAD: Overall good but it does have some cosmetic flaws. It has dimples on the roof from a hail storm, from before I bought it. Previous owner lived in Montana. There is a decent open hand sized dent on the upper rear passenger side. I think a previous owner backed into a roof awning. Also a smaller dent on the high rear drivers side. There are some normal dents on the belly pans at the very bottom. The aluminum is otherwise in good condition. The original clear coat, that came factory applied, is faded and foggy in areas around the top. This can be polished out. Skylights have some poor patching by a previous owner with black tar or something on the roof. Not noticeable from ground.
Other relevant items
- All original curved glass windows intact with the exception of the kitchen window (1). It is acrylic.
- Rear flat window is original glass. Front window is acrylic (replaced before I bought it.
- Plywood Floor is original and is completely solid. Absolutely no soft spots.
- Gas/ AC electric fridge (no 12volt). It was replaced around 1975 (I have the original receipts from previous owner). Both modes work fine.
- Original water pump. Works fine
- Airstream Central Control panel intact. This was only on International version trailers. Water pump switch, Battery test, water level, black tank level gauges all work
- All electric lighting/ fans etc work.
- Weight is 3420 lbs. Hitch weight is 399lbs. Fresh water tank is 30 gallons. Black water tank is 17 gallons. No Grey water tank (no gray tanks on old airstreams).
Overall this is a fun solid trailer that is ready use. Do remember, it is 40 years old. I have put quite a bit of money and TLC into it over the years. It has been a great family rig and the base for all of our vacations. Tows great, no problems. I’ve towed it to Big Sur quite a few times if that’s any indication. It’s far from perfect cosmetically speaking and it can use some more love but from an appliance and functional standpoint its road ready. Price is negotiable but I am not interested in low ball offers. I will not negotiate price over email or phone. Cash only. Trailer is available to see in the Culver City area.
